cherry tomato
We’ve had some really rough storms the past couple weeks and the temperatures have been cold. Yesterday morning my husband scrapped a heavy frost off our truck windshield. I sure enough thought that what few things we have in our garden would be bit back by the frost. I took my camera to the garden to assess the damage…
I must say I’m nicely surprised that none of our plants were damaged. I was especially happy to see that our cherry tomatoes are starting to bloom and our cucumbers, squash and sunflowers are starting to come up.

I planted 20 hills of squash. It looks as if the storm washed about 1/3 of the hills down so far the seeds aren’t coming up. It’s no big deal really because if the few squash plants that are growing now all make that will be plenty, but I’ve a bit of an obsession with growing squash and figure I’ll be replanting anyhow. The round squash are just so darn pretty and fun to see growing in my garden. lol
We still have a few more tomato plants and some more seeds to plant. We’re going to try to grow a few vegetables that we’ve never grown before: watermelon radishes, swiss chard & kohlrabi. I have no clue how to cook them or what they taste like. We’re just trying something new for fun. Hopefully we’ll get them planted soon (if the weather allows and the ground dries out enough.)
Here’s wishing you all a successful gardening season!

E. C., how wonderful to see your seedlings sprout their wings. I will enjoy your gardening efforts vicariously since I’ve not planted anything this year. I don’t have water yet at my new place and I don’t really want to plant anything here. Enjoy your growing things! Happy Spring!
Hi Ellen,
You’re welcome to enjoy my gardening all you want too. I’m happy to share it with you. I figure when you get all set up on your property, you’ll be planting and growing things in vases and gardens and probably herbs on your window sill too. I hope you get your water hooked up soon.
Happy Spring to you too!
Very exciting! I better get busy!
My hubby found the round squash you were talking about. I can hardly wait to get planting!
Tina
Cool Tina, Which one did he find? This is so neat. You better post pictures of them round jewels. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do… but be careful, you may become a squash-addict too. lol
They just say “squash (summer) Ronde de Nice”.
I already am an addict! Usually it’s the only thing I eat at the county fair, I will choose it if offered at a restaurant, baked in bread, steamed, broiled, fried… any way is good. I’m hooked.
Tina
Aw cool Tina! I’m so happy to finally meet another squash addict. I echo your squash sentiments sincerely and deliciously. Maybe we should start a support group. lol
Ronde de Nice is a Round French Zucchini squash variety. The round french that I grew last year had vines that were thicker and taller than the 8 ball & one ball vines. They were lush & beautiful. And the squash tasted magnificent! I can hardly wait for my wee plants to grow big and I can harvest some fresh squash to eat. ~giggling with addictive glee~
I wish you success in your gardening & I look forward to seeing some pictures.
LOL, yeah, a support group!
Oh man, I better get to plantin’ NOW!
The pressure is on…your garden is a tough act to follow!
lol Tina, no pressure, but I really want to see some photos of your progress.
Happy Gardening!
wow, your tomatoe plants must have superpowers to withstand frost as they did.
I have only planted about 15 potatoes. I check every day hoping to see them peaking above the soil. But so far I only see two tiny stems. Its so fun to watch the garden though, isnt it?
Hey MM,
I know what you mean about my plants withstanding the frost. I think it’s the varieties we bought because every other year our plants have gotten half killed by late frosts.
I love growing potatoes. We tried it for a couple of years, but ran into problems with no storage space. I hope you’ll post pictures of your potatoes. I figure soon they’ll take off growing & they’ll be grown before you know it.
I agree garden is fun and relaxing. It also gives me an enjoyable sense of primal fulfillment growing my own food. The best part is knowing what exactly is used in the gardening and the fresh vitamins too.
Oh Dear…guilt trip…yours is growing…haven’t even started mine…sigh
lol Granny, I’m sure you’ll start your garden when the time is right. Post some pictures when you get it going.
Glad you didn’t have worse damage. Hopefully your winter weather is over, and you can look forward to your garden growing!
Thank you Dianna. There will probably be a couple more cool snaps but hopefully the frosty ones are over with.
Hi EC,
LOL
Radish is a good choice, they grew really quickly and your’ve just reminded me I need to plant some more!
I am jealous your cherry toms have flowers on them
Started mine from seed back in Feb and still no tommy tatoes yet
PiP
Pip,
You’ve got a huge jump on me on the squash though. And you always have such wonderful things growing. I can’t imagine starting plants in February. I think that’s one of the interesting aspects of earth and the different climates we live in.
