WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge
This week’s theme is:
“Simple”
Simple is such a pleasant thought. Usually, it’s in reference to the good old days when times where more simple, but alas they really wasn’t more simple, they was just less complicated as to the number of choices to accomplish a goal.
I decided to make a simple post about the simple tools from way-back-when that are still here with us and used in simple and lessening manner.
I thought a set-up with my clipboard, pencil & a bit of writing would be a nice photo for the challenge…
Simple right?
Nope?
Baby-cat thought I was setting up a simple place for her amusement.
After a few moments, Baby-cat grew bored and left to seek her amusements elsewhere. I continued to take the photos that I had tried too, to begin with.
It’s not simple to get the right lighting for paper in a photo, so I had to do some shade-editing to my photo for brightness and whatnot.
I finally got it to look okay, not great but it’ll have to do.

I looked at my photo and held a simple sigh of relief that it was ready to upload for the challenge… and that’s when ‘Simple got Complicated’ and demanded more content then just a challenge acknowledgement. This was not as simple a set up of writing tools as it seemed. There were so many dynamics and decades of histories that came together to make up this simple nostalgic setting.
I looked at the clipboard and remembered it’s history. We bought it from a going-out-of-business rummage sale from a factory my husband worked at over 25 years ago. Because of the factory going abroad hundreds of good folks lost their jobs and homes and cars and had to settle for lesser paying jobs or like us, move to a new city and start over.
The notebook paper has a history too, it’s made from trees that were planted and had taken many years to grow to be harvested. I bet they were homes for woodland critters and were a major loss to them.
Then there’s the ink which was made somewhere and then shipped in to be used for the lines on the paper.
I could stretch this out and add the history of our buying the paper and from what store, but I won’t.
The pencil’s history was one made in yet another factory where trees were grown and harvested. And I’ve no clue where the lead or graphite for the pencil came from…
Then there’s the metal that was mined and used for the cap of the pencil erasers…
Which brings us to the rubber, or whatever it’s called, the erasers are made of, being manufactured from factories that too have utilize whatever mixture to make them.
And you’d think I’d be done with this thought process, but hang on, I’ve got more…
The few stanzas I wrote on the paper are from a poem that I started back in 2006. I began writing it with a pencil on paper. I worked on it off and on for awhile then I’d walk away from it for a few months or a year and then write a bit more. I finally had to write it to a file on my pc because of it’s ever growing length. My understanding of the storyline and characters was slow to develop. The characters would not behave and would grow sullen until I would submit and let them continue the epic tale as they wanted it told. (Folks who write stories know what I mean by my characters misbehaving.) It took 4 years for me to finish the poem. It’s the longest poem I’ve ever written, it’s an epic of around 85 stanzas maybe a bit more, I can’t recall off-hand. It sits waiting for it’s next phase in life which may continue to be for the simple amusement of myself and family.
Anyway, back to the simple challenge,
then I thought briefly about how tremendously long this post would be if I included the simple histories of the camera I took the photos with,
the stool I set the clipboard on,
the carpet on the floor where the stool set,
our house where the stool sits,
how we came to by our house.
Then there’s the simple history of how I got my laptop that I uploaded my supposedly simple photos for this simple photo challenge theme to,
and goodness I can’t forget about the history of my blog on WordPress
and of course I can’t forget the history of WordPress itself.
Should I also add the history of the creation of the internet?
And what about my blogging buddies and readers, you wonderful people who kindly read my nonsense, what about your histories on the other-side of the monitor, What brought you to this simple moment of reading my simple nonsense?
I have to stop now because my simple mind is simply worn to a frazzle. lol
