I know why so many millions of folks have chosen blogging as their web presence over personal websites now. I had a website up until a couple years ago. Now my own line presence is my blogs. I really enjoy my blogs, but I think webpages still serve useful purposes as well.
I used to have quite a large personal website. I built my own pages. I pretty much could code everything I wanted to make it look the way I wanted, up to the point of java or anything too tech and then I’d go and find the html frags or codes on the internet and copy & paste the features into my page. It was fun and most enjoyable.
This morning I decided to build a simple webpage to post my book listings. Nothing fancy, just images with a short descriptions and a link to my amazon page. I was going to find a free web-host and then upload it. I figured that I should build the page and then seek out a host.
I made a background image and began building my webpage. Make that ‘began trying’. I’ve worked off and on all day long trying to build it and I still haven’t gotten it finished. I’ve coded and recoded myself into a headache. To my disappointment the old html frags that I used to use won’t work as efficiently now. I have no idea why.
I’ve surfed around and found that the older codes should still work but there are newer codes that should work better. I couldn’t get any of them to work efficiently. Putting them all together proved to be too big of a challenge.
Sooo, I resorted to the way I originally learned to build webpages, I’m building the basic part of the webpage in a WYSIWYG editor web-authoring program and then editing and fine-tuning it in notepad or with it’s source page.
Kompozer is the web-authoring tool that I’m using.
As I edit the html document, I’m learning different codes to use for tasks I want to accomplish. Maybe this is a good thing. The proverbial ‘They’ say, it helps keep the mind sharper if you’re challenging it and learning new tasks. At my age, I need all the help I can get. lol
My new webpage is coming along. I don’t know when I’ll get it finished. (I may delete it and say the heck with it.) lol
Wish me luck!
Sounds very complicated to me and I wish you good luck – you are a better person that I, to attempt it! Don’t forget to give us the url once it’s finished.
Hi,
Good on you, coding is not easy, I am useless at things like that. Good luck with the web site, I am sure you will get it all just the way you want.
Hi EC I do a little work for an Expat Website initially it was all front end stuff but a couple of years ago I asked if I could learn some basic html. I did not find it easy to learn as my brain is just not wired that way. However, I’m a Capricorn and I’m stubborn so I kept at it. I made loads of mistakes and sometimes I would spend hours just trying to work out what I’d done wrong. Eventually, I was giving the task of uploading all the content on the site! I felt elated that at my age I’d acheived this.
My kids kept saying why bother?, like the nanowrimo why bother?
I then made a slideshow, of insect photos and ovelayed my voice reading a poem I’d written. Took me hours and I could not believe I’d acheived it. I was talking to my son on the phone and when I showed him what I’d done on YouTube he said he was proud of me and could not believe his mum had done anything so technical” Neither could I actually!
So I can really appreciate your tenacity and sense of achievement and yes it does keep the brain active. Good luck and keep at it! I seem to remember in the recesses of my memory you published you self published your books. Was it easy?
I am impressed. Code scares the heck out of me!
I agree with the others: I’m lucky to just get things posted on my blog! Good luck!
YOU’RE CONFUSED? WHAT IN THE HECK DOES THAT MAKE ME? You lost me at webpage, LOL! Go E.C.! Margie
Good luck to you. I have no idea how to make a web page
Yay! I’m patting myself on the back because I recognized one thing you said. I know what WYSIWYG is!
I know absolutely nothing about stuff like this; I do well to post something on my blog! But — I wish you luck!
It gave me a headache just reading about it! LOL My hat is off to those of you who know (or try to figure out) this stuff.
Very brave, good luck E.C.
Thanks everyone,
Wow, you folks are a wonderful support system. I hope I can get the site built soon. I’ll post it’s url when (if) I get it built. Thanks so much.
Yep, Pip, learning the persnickety rules and requirements to publish wasn’t an easy task for me. I’m glad I did it though, even though I haven’t made a dime yet. I don’t have enough sales yet for Amazon to send me a check. It’s all good though, Self-publishing my books is an accomplishment that I’m happy with.
