This morning I began dehydrating a few old oranges and apples. Even though they looked good enough to eat on the inside, on the outside they had lost their glow and started showing signs of bruising and were headed for the trash bin soon.
I dehydrated them for 12 hours to dry them out as much as possible. I plan on using them in crafts or in a dish like potpourri. I don’t want them to mold, rot or get stinky.
I considered making bird-feeders out of the oranges, but I just couldn’t bring myself too. I was afraid that Babycat would think the feeders would be Birdie Buffets just for her and I couldn’t do that to the birds. Bless their be-feathered hearts, Babycat keeps them in all in a kerfuffle as it is.
Here’s a photo of some orange skin bird-feeders that my sister made a few years ago. Her birds made quick work of them and ate them all up. It’s a great way to use old oranges and feed the birdies too… (if you don’t have a cat)
I hope everyone had a pleasant weekend.
I took Sunday off from working on the webpage. My head appreciated the break and the ache went away. lol
I decided not to push myself on the webpage and build it in stages instead of trying to build it all at once or I’ll give up all together. Time will surely tell.
P.S. I would have gotten this posted sooner this evening, but there was ‘Big Bang Theory’ episodes playing that I’d never seen and they didn’t go off until 10pm and then I got side tracked doing super dishes and well here I am rushing trying to post while it’s still Monday. Let see if I make it…
Cool I made it. I posted it with 3 whole minutes to spare.
Love the bit about the birds and cat. Have a similar problem here and that is why we belled the cats, 99,9% successful.
Hey Newsferret
Belling the cats sounds like a great idea. I bet it would be most helpful to alert the birds.
I wish I could put a collar with bell on Babycat, but we live in country suburbia and there’s too many barbed wire fences that she could get caught on.
Great idea though.
I would love to put a camera or a gps on her, like that animal show did, just to see where Babycat goes. I think that would be awesome to watch.
How do you dry them?
Hey G1947

It’s great to see you again. I hope you’ve been well and doing fine.
I used my old ‘Snackmaster Jr’ dehydrator to dry the fruit
Hi,
I love the idea of the oranges made into bird feeders, I will never look at an old orange the same way.
Thanks Mags
Love both ideas and will go now to the compost bucket and dig out the tired looking fruit that I put there this morning. Bird feeders and dried fruit for the birds – here we come!
Thanks Mbt
I’m also a fan of Big Bang Theory. What a pretty dish you’ve used to display your fruit. I like making treats for the birds. Can you believe I bought a cookbook specifically for that?
Thanks Patti
Great minds think alike.
I think it’s cool that you bought a cookbook for that. I don’t see it any different than the dog food cookbooks I have.
I like the idea for the orange bird feeder. I haven’t seen that before. And I was going to ask how you dried the fruit. I haven’t dried fruit for years.
Thanks Judy
The electric dehydrator is really handy.
I think orange bird-feeders would be cheerful looking, especially in the wintertime: a spot of color in a gray world or a spot of color in a white snow covered one. What an enchanting photo op that would be.
