The other day as I was looking though my cabinet, I saw a box of Devil’s Food cake mix that was close to expiring. I didn’t want to throw it out, but I didn’t want to make a cake either. Box cakes are too big for us and go to waste. So, I decided on cupcakes. The mix makes 24 and I can freeze them, they’ll keep until we take a hankering for one or until our grandson comes over and wants a snack. ![]()
I kept a few out for us to munch on for a couple days. I didn’t have a cake plate or anything, so I improvised. I put the cupcakes on a pretty clear plate and then covered them with one of my glass mixing bowls.
To freeze cupcakes, I let them cool completely, then wrap them in plastic wrap. Put them in a box & freeze them.
I guess I should mention that it’s a good idea not to frost the cupcakes before freezing them.
To thaw them out, I unwrap the plastic wrap from them, sit them on a plate on the counter and let them thaw out. When they’re thawed I can put frosting on them and/or decorate them. I usually don’t frost them unless our grandson is visiting.
Unwrapping the plastic wrap is the key to keeping cupcakes from being gooey when they thaw out.

Do you have a favorite flavor of cupcake?
Do you ever freeze a batch for later use?
Wishing you all a sweet rest of the week!
Looks yummy! My favorite cupcake is plain ol’ vanilla.
Thanks Dianna,
I prefer vanilla too, but no and then a rich chocolate cupcake is mighty tasty.
Yes we freeze cupcakes to eat later! We like our cupcakes frostingless..
And we like for them to be chocolate!! And calorie-less too.
Thanks Pix
How do you make the calories disappear?
Only in our minds E.C. Only in our minds.
You are too funny.
Great idea, E.C. Devil’s Food sounds good to me. I need to find out how Pix gets the calories out of hers!
Thanks Patti
I’m wondering about that too. lol
I freeze oatmeal cookis but I have never tried to freeze cupcakes. What a great idea.
Thanks Judy
Frozen oatmeal cookies sounds great.
Get one of those suckers out on the counter! I’m on my way!! Margie
lol Margie
I’m heading to the freezer now.
Maybe this would keep us from eatting them all in one day.
Yep, that’s what works for us Tina
Great tip! I often make too many cupcakes, yet hate to have them go to waste. Love the idea of freezing them.
Thanks Leah
I like not having to throw them out. Less waste is a good thing. Plus the cupcakes are handy to have when you just want a treat for the little ones.
What a great idea for those occassions when you need a lot of cupcakes. And the bowl and plate trick is brilliant. Nice!
Thanks so much Renee
With a bit of decor, I think the bowl & Plate could be a pretty center piece. Glad you like the cupcake freezing idea. I agree it would be handy for alot of cupcakes.
